Electrical Panel Inspections in Paris
The industry recommends panel inspections every three to five years. One reason is that the National Fire Protection Association updates the National Electrical Code every three years. You don’t have to update your home just because the NEC updates. However, it’s a good idea to understand where your panel is no longer up to code. Consider that the NEC added surge protection as a requirement. Many homes built before 2020 don’t have that protection.
Another reason to schedule electrical panel inspections is to determine if you have enough amp coverage. Many older homes do not. The power needs of the average household have grown tremendously over the years. Many houses need a 250-amp panel or greater. The NEC only requires 150 amps, and old homes often have much less.
Many homes aren’t up to code in regards to their circuit breakers either. The NEC requires ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) in any living area where there’s water. That includes kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and rooms where you have a fish tank.
The NEC also requires arc-fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs). An ACFI prevents fires caused by electrical arcs. They’re required in bedrooms and many other types of rooms. What if a room needs both GFCIs and AFCIs? There are circuit interrupters available that provide both kinds of protection.
Panel inspections also help you ensure you don’t have overloaded circuits. They’re among the most common panel problems in homes. You can also consider the number of circuit breakers you have and whether there’s room for more. That opens up the option of adding outlets and lighting.
